When my daughter was about seven years old,
she asked me one day what I did at work. I told
her I worked at the college - that my job was to
teach people how to draw.
She stared back at me, incredulous, and said,
'You mean they forget?' - Howard Ikemoto
Are you interested in painting well, getting better? Do
you need inspiration? How about gaining some helpful
expert assistance?
Maybe you ‘forgot’ how to draw, and now you’re interested, back at it
again. Perhaps you have creative urges, bought some new paints and
canvases but haven’t really gotten off to a good start and aren’t quite
satisfied. It’s a common thing, but it doesn’t have to be that way! That
creative urge is a good impulse, an important matter to attend to, but
you don’t want to frustrate yourself or shoot yourself in the foot.
Having a quality mentor can help lead you beyond the basic creative
urge and into a very successful experience of fulfilling your artistic
dreams.
Occasionally, Jack Anglin will take on a student for mentoring and
assisting in their artistic development. There’s so much that Jack can
teach and demonstrate, making the artistic endeavor much more
enjoyable and fun. From simple basics like drawing, understanding
perspective, color theory, to a variety of advanced techniques, to
technical data about materials, and including inspirational readings --
Jack has a great deal of experience and is very glad to offer any and
all of that to those who are willing to ‘do the work’.
The ideal arrangement is for the student to already be underway,
working on art projects, and not a complete novice. But it is possible
to start from scratch with anyone of almost any age. We can work for
a few hours at a time at your home and studio, preferably at your
familiar location --say once a week or once a month -- at your pulse,
but you’ll have to be committed to this and strive to make progress.
Whether painting with acrylics, oils, pastels, or other media, Jack
Anglin will work with the student, not creating just a clone of himself
and his work, but being sensitive to the student/mentee’s own
creativity and evolving style. Jack will groom and inform, offer
constructive critique, and bring things to bear that some art teachers
don’t even know about.
If you have the desire to become an artist, then mentoring under
Jack’s direction will take you into wonderful new territory that will
make a huge difference in your output, and save you considerable
frustration and loss of time. You should try a two-hour session and
see how it feels. That’s a two way street, as the artist will be sensitive
to how he thinks a teaching relationship might work with you, he’s
not going to waste your time or money. Even just that one
introductory ‘lesson’ will change your life for the better. Absolutely!

Jack Anglin started drawing and began his fascination with art
at an early age. Winning a city-wide art competition Blue
Ribbon in the second grade marked him as the family artist,
and soon art supplies were a frequent part of the birthday and
holiday gifts received. Then teachers followed with many art
projects for the burgeoning artist, from making teaching aids,
to all the newsletter lettering and set up, as well as cartooning-
-everything and anything art related.
Inevitably, art became Jack’s major at La Roche College in
Pittsburgh, with a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Arts (in
association with The Art Institute of Pittsburgh). While in
college, Jack started drawing portraits, and succeeded in
working on a New Jersey Boardwalk for two summers
sketching realistic charcoal portraits from life. That was an
amazing experience in drawing and making hundreds of
sketches.
After graduating in the Spring of 1976, Jack headed west and
worked In Newport Beach, California, making portraits and
soon moved on to Las Vegas, where portraiture was his venue
once again, but moving up to full color and painting in pastels.
Working in several casino/hotels making portraits over a six
year period was an excellent opportunity. Jack always sought
to improve and grow, and the work in Las Vegas was perfect
for that.
Jack moved to Texas in 1982, then on to North Carolina in
1986. Soon, he had a studio in an active Arts Council and
began his portrait painting career in earnest. Along the way,
the artist has made many oil and pastel portraits, been in
shows, worked in several frame shops and many galleries in
North Carolina; Virginia Beach; Norfolk; Newport, RI; and on
St. Croix, USVI. You’d be hard pressed to find another artist
with as much and as varied a working experience as Jack
Anglin -- all valuable information to glean and apply to your
own life and work.
Jack lives in Henderson, Nevada, in the south of Las Vegas at
the edge of the desert hills. Call and talk about your needs or
about someone you might like to sponsor for some art
instruction sessions. It might be the gift of a lifetime and
change a person’s entire course of life. Online instruction is
possible, too!
