Winter Rider / Scout after Edward Curtis & Frederick Remington
Oil on canvas 16X20 inches
Edward Curtis was a dedicated 19th Century photographer who made
it his life’s work to record Native American peoples and their way of
life. Curtis made possible an extraordinary record unlike anything
anyone has ever accomplished. The Curtis collection is inspirational in
many ways, and being all black & white, or sepia images, it allows me
as artist to imagine the colors of the scenes and personalities.
Winter Rider / Scout is a favorite image of mine from the Curtis
archive, one that evokes a twilight scene such as something Frederick
Remington might have created. I enjoy painting nocturnes and low
light images as did many of my favorite artist/illustrators, people such
as Remington, Whistler, and N.C. Wyeth.
In this image one might imagine the cold, feel the wind, and perhaps
wonder how far this rider and horse still have to go. We might ponder
what he is doing, maybe watching for trouble, hunting, or trapping.

Watering Hole after Edward Curtis & Frederick Remington
Oil on canvas 16X20 inches
It appears that Edward Curtis directed many of his famous
photographs, essentially setting up the shots. This painting contains all
the stereotypical components that have solidified in many people’s
minds concerning what an ‘indian’ looks like. The Native American
‘chief’ in this image wears a ceremonial feathered headdress, has the
full eccoutrements, and includes the rifle. Nevertheless, its a beautiful
scene, and apparently one can lead a horse to water!

Night Rider after Edward Curtis & Frederick Remington
Oil on canvas 16X20 inches
This painting was probably arranged, and as the large view cameras
used at that time were not able to make fast exposures and not easily
portable like modern SLRs, the horse must have been halted, there is a
little dust blur, but the horse and rider had to have been stopped and
this is a lucky exposure. As I said, it appears that Edward Curtis
directed many of his famous photographs, essentially setting up the
shots. I wonder if this is the same horse used for the Watering Hole
photo, perhaps the same person without the headdress? This was a fun
photo to translate to color as a nocturne painting.
